Key Safes Overview
Key Safes are used for the safe retention of keys (or other means)
used for isolating or "locking off" in accordance with C.E.G.B
safety rules.
They form part of a Safe system of work; a brief example of this is
as follows:
- Once a maintenance or outage order has been issued, the equipment
must then be isolated.
- When the equipment has been isolated, the keys are locked in the
nominated key safe by the Senior Authorized Person (SAP). The SAP
holds the Control key, which is common for all key safes in that
area.
- The first engineer that is required to work on the isolated equipment
is then issued with a Permit to Work, and is also issued with
secondary Key A from the nominated key safe. The next engineer is
issued with Key B, and so on. Upon completion of their work, the
engineers return their key to the key safe and have their permit
signed off. The key safe cannot be opened until all secondary keys
have been returned and all permits signed off. The SAP can then
open the key safe and release the keys so that the isolation lock can
be removed and the equipment reinstated.
